Pallet gate on wide loading dock

Client: Transportation and Logistics Warehousing Company

Requirement: Whilst loaded pallet handling between vehicles and warehouse was being safely operated on roller conveyors. there was one area where loading operations exposed a hazard.  The pallet repair and paint booth area personnel were loading stacked pallets onto and off the loading dock.  This exposed personnel to falling off the dock when the roller shutter was opened and in coming into contact with moving loads. A risk assessment recommended the installation of a fool-proof safety pallet gate

Problems: 

• The loading dock roller shutter was close enough to the dock edge for a conventional up and over type gate.  But was over 3.5 metres wide.  
   
• The paint booth had to be moved back to accommodate the siting of the pallet gate.  
   
• The gate had to be capable of accepting stacks of pallets 10 high, although the roller shutter had limited clearance. 
   
• The roller shutter was routinely being left open between loading operations.  
   
• This exposed any personnel to the danger of falling off the loading dock edge.
    
• Also during loading operations, personnel had additional hazard of coming into contact with moving loads.

Solution:

• Installation of a Kappa* Model Fold-Back Low headroom space-saving pallet gate
   
• Special wide version with additional centre gate post and angle bracings to pivot arms were fitted to provide additional strength due to gate width.
   
• Anti-slam dampers and some aluminium tubing were incorporated for ease of use.
   
• The gates protect all personnel whenever the roller shutters are open and when the gates are open for loading the inner gate prevents contact with moving loads. 
   
• This model is also very easy to operate, having a balanced gate system which negates operator fatigue.
